Amid heightened security ahead of the Assembly elections, police arrested a young man with a country-made pistol in the Siliguri area late Thursday night. The accused has been identified as Gopal Karmakar, who was detained from the Pradhan Nagar police station jurisdiction.
According to police inputs, the operation was carried out between 1:30 AM and 2:00 AM after officers received specific information about a युवक roaming with a weapon near Darjeeling More. A police team rushed to the location, intercepted the suspect, and conducted a search.
During the search, a country-made pistol along with live cartridges was recovered from his possession. As the accused failed to produce any valid documents, he was arrested on the spot. A case has been registered under the Arms Act, and further investigation is underway. The accused is scheduled to be produced before a Siliguri court.
